If I ever come across a book called Bookstore in the Alps I am immediately buying it, until then I’ll keep visiting Bücherladen – the actual bookstore in the Alps.
Located in the picturesque Alpine village of Appenzell (Appenzell District) this cute bookstore is the perfect place to spend some time exploring and browsing through the books.
With a large offer of German books and local souvenirs this bookstore also offers a selection of English books. So grab yourself a book and enjoy it by the fire in one of the local hotels or on the nearby meadow.
This is the only bookstore in the small canton of Appenzell Innerhodden and as such it’s an important part of the local community.
If you wish to come and visit this beautiful bookstore I recommend getting on S21 train from St Gallen HB to Appenzell. On this 30 minute ride, you’ll be able to see beautiful sceneries of cantons Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden.
If you wish to have a day trip from Zurich I recommend combining a visit to Appenzell District and Abbey Library of St Gall in St Gallen. A train ride from Zurich to St Gallen is around an hour.
Buchladen bookstore was open 28 years ago and this year it re-opened on the new location in the main street. You can’t miss it, it’s located in the beautiful old building with yellow windows.
Wall of fame in the bookstore. Exposed bricks give the bookshop a relaxed and cozy atmosphere. From the moment you step into the bookstore, you feel welcomed and charmed.
After exploring the town and book browsing treat yourself in one of the local bakeries. Bakeries in Switzerland are outstanding, with a large offer of baked goods and pastries.
Just across the bookstore is cozy bakery Landbackerei. If you go there I suggest trying fresh croissants or some local pastry with a cup of tee or coffee.

What a bookstore! I was immediately charmed by the tastefully decorated space within. Small, yet cosy, I right away felt at home. Especially lovely was the young woman who helped me find the book I was looking for. And much more. I think it was Ms. Hutter?
