Bye, bye July!
July 2020 was the weirdest month of the year so far. At the end of June, I fell and hurt my leg, my knee precisely. Because of my injury, I had to spend the entire month of July lying in bed and after a while, lying all day is not fun.
If you are looking for a fantasy series that is not too complex, features dragons, elves, dwarves, and many other magical creatures, you must read Eragon books. It is not as complicated as Wheel of Time or Stormlight Archive, but it’s gratifying.
Eragon books – The Inheritance Circle
The Inheritance Cycle, written by Christopher Paolini, consists of 4 novels and one collection of short stories:
- Eragon
- Eldest
- Brisingr
- Inheritance
- The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm
Eragon
I read this book many times when I was in middle school. When I moved out of my parents’ house, I left it in my bedroom with other books I used to read in that period.
Fast forward 7 years later, and I’m paying a visit to my parents when I fell and badly injured my knee. I spent the entire month of July in bed either reading or watching Netflix.
When I got bored with my Kindle, my mom brought me the Inheritance Cycle in hopes of cheering me up. I barely got through this first book, but it did spark my interest to read other books in the series, and by the time I was done with reading Inheritance Cycle, it was time for doctors to take the cast of my leg and for me to get out of bed. These books definitely saved me from going insane, and after the first book, each one was better than the last.
Eldest
I vividly remember that this was my favorite book the first time I read The Inheritance Cycle. I loved all descriptions from the dwarvish kingdom and elvish forests. Eragon’s journey with dwarves and stay with elves is probably the best thing in the entire cycle. I didn’t particularly like Roran’s parts, but overall the book was good.
Brisingr
Before I re-read Brisingr this summer, I didn’t remember a single thing from this book. And I will probably forget it again in 2 weeks. I liked the election of the next dwarven king and all nuances of the dwarven politics. I didn’t care for Roran or Nasuada. Murtagh is okay.
Inheritance
Now that I’m writing this review, I can confidently tell that I don’t remember anything other than the end. That’s how unremarkable this book was. Long and boring. Was I supposed to care for Nasuada? She went from a fantastic character in books 1 & 2 to a complete brat in 3 & 4. Murtagh’s and Nausada’s “romance” in this book was better than Roran’s and Katrina’s in all four books. Also, Roran’s story arc is a bit too similar to Perin’s (Wheel of Time). I liked the elves, dwarves, Urgals, and were cats. The ending was lovely. My overall rating for this series is 3.75 stars.
The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm
Paolini has greatly improved since the first Eragon book. In this book, his writing is more mature and complex, and characters are further explored. I like all three stories, and I really hope that Paolini revisits Alagaësia soon.
